TikTok, TikTok, are you tracking them or not?

Posted on March 16, 2022January 30, 2023 by Julia D.

Yeah, I’m sure that you’ve heard this a lot lately: TikTok is next big thing in social media marketing. People spend more and more time watching TikToks and there is a big opportunity there.

So, you decided to give TikTok Ads a try and see how they work for your business.

You prepare a nice campaign, target a great audience, configure tracking in your marketing tracker and you are all set.

You receive conversions data from the affiliate network back to your link tracker just fine and have all the metrics such as Profit and ROI tracked.

Now comes the problem:

What happens to the tracked conversions? Your conversions only appear in your ad tracker, right?

So they don’t get passed back to the traffic source (TikTok).

You may ask what is wrong with this model?

Well, you are missing on automatic ad delivery optimizations that can be made by TikTok!

Each conversion passed back to TikTok will offer them details about the best performing ads and audiences, so they will be able to apply automatic optimizations in the ad delivery algorithm for your campaign in order to bring you even more conversions.

Now you may be thinking that you could configure a Postback URL in your affiliate marketing tracker to pass conversions back to TikTok, right?

Oh no, TikTok doesn’t provide a Postback URL that can be fired for each conversion, they don’t have this option.

Then how can you have the ads optimized based on conversions in TikTok?

The solution is here

The solution is to use the TikTok API instead because this allows you to post conversions back to TikTok. But implementing an API requires coding and technical knowledge, it isn’t as simple as setting up a Postback URL.

Luckily, CPV Lab Pro conversion tracker comes with the TikTok API already integrated and you can configure TikTok conversions with zero coding!

What is the TikTok API?

TikTok events API is a server-side integration that allows you to send events (conversions) from your server (in this case it is the CPVLab instance) directly to the TikTok server.

These events are very important because they allow continued optimization of your campaigns at TikTok level.

By passing information about conversions, your ad delivery will be automatically improved in real-time in order to get even more conversions registered from your audience.

Quite a nice feature to have and something that you will miss without the API integration.

How does the TikTok API work?

You will have the campaign tracked just like any other campaign, from the initial ad click all the way to the offer page.

But when you get a conversion for your offer, the conversion will be first marked in the conversion tracking platform (CPV Lab), then the ad tracker will automatically pass the conversions to TikTok through their API.

Each time a conversion is reported from the affiliate network to CPV Lab Pro, it also gets posted to TikTok Ads through the new API integration.

The process if fully automated, you only need to configure it once when you setup the campaign in CPV Lab Pro and then it will work for all conversions.

The more conversions you pass back to TikTok, the better optimized the ad delivery gets for your campaign.

It helps the attribution process. Simple as that!

So, by using a 3rd party marketing tracker with TikTok API integrated (like CPV Lab Pro) you will track the conversions first in the conversion tracker and then you will send the conversion information back to TikTok via the API (server to server).

Here is a visual representation of the data flow for a converting visitor in your TikTok campaign.
