How often creatives actually need to be refreshed, the exact signals that tell you a campaign is ready to scale, why tracking and attribution are non-negotiable for e-commerce brands, and a real campaign Jane’s team took from a cold start to millions of dollars a month.

Let’s get into it.

Listen to the episode on our Spotify channel

Or watch it on CPV channel on Youtube

Q: We talked a bit before about creative types. What’s the lifespan of an ad? How often should creatives be refreshed?

Jane Ejim: Let me lead with an example, I do like examples. Treat creatives like milk. Milk has a shelf life. Same with creatives. If you’re not refreshing every two, three weeks, you’re basically feeding your audience leftovers, and then wondering why they stopped showing up, because it’s not working anymore. People are blind to it already. It has a shelf life, just like any product out there.

Q: How many creatives would you recommend running at a time?

Jane Ejim: It’s all about when you start testing. With A/B testing, you might run four or five, or three creatives at once. You’d understand which one works depending on the team the affiliates have, or maybe they’re using creatives provided by the brand. But those creatives provided by the brand were given not only to us, but also to others, so it’s not the best scenario to only use those.

When it’s a new one, created specifically for us, we tell our affiliates, and it’s a good bet that it converts really well. But answering your question, I’d say having two or three creatives for A/B testing at the start, and doing fast tests. Test fast, be bold about the tests, and start cheap. I’d rather spend 50 bucks on 10 bad ideas than risk 5,000 on one.

Test a few creatives at once and see what’s working, what’s not. Give yourself 48 to 72 hours to understand the statistics. Don’t waste much time before you pick. And if you’re running different sources, run a different creative on each one. If I’m talking about affiliates that are more experienced, running a few traffic sources at the same time, like social media plus paid search, they’d run two different creatives. Then maybe every two weeks, try to change those creatives, freshen them up.

Julia’s Take: This same logic applies to your landing pages, not just your creatives. Split testing landing pages is where a lot of affiliates leave money on the table, they test the ad but run every click through the same single page. If you’re testing 2-3 creatives, test 2-3 landing page variations alongside them, and let the data tell you which combination actually converts, not your gut.

Q: If you could only improve one thing to increase conversions, what would it be? Creative, landing page, audience?

Jane Ejim: I think it’s creatives, because the audience, you can’t really change it unless you switch your traffic source. You can change your approach to reach the right audience, but the creatives are very important. It’s very creative work, everybody has their own style. Some affiliates are very creative, they switch between creatives, test and update every two to three weeks. Some are more beginners, they use one creative for a whole month and then wonder why they can’t scale. The more experienced ones don’t have that problem, they have fresh ideas flowing all the time.

What I would do to increase conversion rate is definitely the creative that brings me the right audience.

Q: Let’s say you’re a media buyer, you launch a campaign, and you get your first conversions. What should the optimization process look like?

Jane Ejim: CPA matters, but I’d care more about ROAS and retention. For media buyers, it’s really about profitability and ROI. I’d look into the campaign, if it’s a cheap first sale that never repeats, it’s not a win, it’s a coincidence. Give the offer more time, don’t judge it from the first day. I see a lot of beginner affiliates run a few clicks and say “the offer isn’t converting, the offer isn’t good.” Five clicks isn’t enough data to know anything.

Give yourself at least 24 to 48 hours to understand if it works. A lot of affiliates get one quick sale and think they’ve found a winner, it might just be coincidence. Don’t bet all your money on it. Give yourself time, the 48 to 72 hour rule.

Q: How do you know when a campaign is ready to scale? What signals should affiliates look for?

Jane Ejim: For e-commerce specifically, like I said, brands don’t like surprises, they like consistency. You can’t send a hundred sales today and two hundred tomorrow overnight, the brand won’t understand it, it’s not like other verticals. They need it to be gradual, they need to understand where the traffic is coming from and how you’re scaling.

I’d say scale gradually, horizontally across audiences before you go vertical on budget. Internally, our process is ongoing, performance reviews, budget and publisher reallocations, doubling down specifically on traffic sources that are already proving themselves. The classic pitfall is doubling budget overnight, and then wondering why performance falls off a cliff, or the brand reaches out and says this was a surprise, we don’t like it, we need to be stable. Stability for e-commerce brands is number one.

Q: Affiliates usually want to scale a winning campaign immediately, while it’s hot. How do you balance that with the brand’s need for stability?

Jane Ejim: I’d say to those affiliates, we can do that with you, but we don’t want to surprise our advertiser. If you found out a campaign is working and you’re ready to put more budget into it and scale, tell us before you do that, and we’ll alert the brand that we’re planning to scale six times more, ten times more, and that the traffic source is the same, it’s just working. They need to be alerted, it’s the trust piece. We don’t need every single detail of how you made it work, we just need to know the traffic source is reliable and that you’re ready to scale, so we can start that conversation with the advertiser before you scale overnight.

One more thing I’d tell affiliates, mind the algorithms, because algorithms are just like people. They don’t like sudden change. If you’re steady at, say, 1,000 clicks and it converts well and stable, but you jump overnight to 2,000 clicks, the conversion rate drops. Not because the offer stopped working, but because it’s a sudden change, and that happens across social platforms too.

Julia’s Take: This is exactly why keeping a close eye on your conversion tracking data day by day matters more than watching one big number at the end of the month. If you can see your conversion rate shifting in real time as you scale, you catch the algorithm reacting before it tanks your whole campaign, instead of finding out after the damage is done.

Q: Are brands willing to share more data about the visitors who convert, beyond just the conversion itself?

Jane Ejim: To be honest, brands can share information that helps improve conversion rate, like, “my audience across the brand, not just through ClickDealer or Customer Direct Group, is mostly women 35 plus,” or specific states like New York or Miami. That kind of information they’re willing to share, not everybody shares it instantly, but we do ask for it on behalf of our affiliates.

For phone numbers or emails, it’s the same approach affiliates take with their own creatives, they don’t want to share what’s working because they don’t want it stolen. These are the brand’s customers, their phone numbers, their emails, and there are laws connected to it, like GDPR, that don’t allow them to share that kind of information with a third party. So basic things like gender and location around an area, most campaigns provide that. But phone numbers or emails aren’t sent back, it’s not even lawful.

Q: How important is tracking for e-commerce advertisers?

Jane Ejim: Of course tracking is important. If you’re not tracking it, you’re not doing marketing. If you’re not tracking it, you’re doing guesswork. For e-commerce especially, the sales cycle can be long and multi-touch, so clean tracking is the difference between knowing what worked and just hoping.

One of the challenges is setting up that first tracking connection between the brand and us as a network, making sure our systems talk to each other the right way. It’s quite important for e-commerce specifically, because of cross-device journeys and privacy changes. Those have made last-click attribution basically fiction. There’s a lot of talk right now about last-click attribution in e-commerce. Media buyers who still optimize purely on last click are optimizing off a story, not the truth, because you could have brought the customer in, but something else got the last click.

“If you’re not tracking it, you’re doing guesswork, not marketing.” – Jane Ejim, ClickDealer

For ClickDealer and CDG, what we can share on postbacks or APIs is order value, product category, new versus returning customer status, multiple conversion events, not just a binary sale happened. That level of detail lets the affiliate optimize traffic toward the customers who are actually worth acquiring, not just the ones who convert once.

Julia’s Take: This is exactly what a postback URL does for you as an affiliate. The moment a conversion happens on the advertiser’s side, that data flows back into your tracker automatically, so you see it in one dashboard across every campaign, instead of waiting on a spreadsheet from the network. If your tracker isn’t set up to catch that data, you’re leaving the exact insight Jane just described on the table.

Q: Do you have an example of a campaign that went from average to profitable? What made the difference?

Jane Ejim: Sure, we have a lot of examples over the years. Let me use Temu, it’s a very known brand, I love their app, I love how they play with the user. You open the app and it’s always full of surprises, did you get a bonus or not. They work with the user, and that’s why the product on its own is very good and already has a lot of organic traffic.

When they came to us, they wanted to increase their reach in specific countries where they weren’t that big yet, they wanted to get to more people there. It started small with us, we tested those geos, plus the rule was we needed new users, not old ones. For a brand that well known, getting new users is a big challenge.

We worked on the campaign, it took a while to understand the right approach, but we started from nothing and built it into a campaign worth millions of dollars every month, bringing a lot of new users to the brand.

Q: That was your own media buying team running it, not affiliates?

Jane Ejim: It was teamwork. We started with the media buying team, tested different geos, and understood how they convert. You might use the same creative translated into different languages, but it won’t work the same, if you did it properly in German for Germany it converts well, but if you just translate the same creative into Spanish for Spain, it won’t work the same way, because the mentality is different.

You need to adapt it and use the local slang for it to actually work. We did all those tests, and eventually it kicked off, and from that point it was just scale.

Q: You mentioned you have offers across multiple geos. Where’s most of that concentrated?

Jane Ejim: Our top tier is US, Canada, English-speaking countries. Number two is Europe, if I mention the top three there, it would be Spain, Italy, Germany. We also work in Asian countries and Arab countries, much less volume than the top two, but we still have them.

Q: How is AI changing e-commerce marketing for affiliates?

Jane Ejim: That’s a very good question, AI is the discussion of everyone right now. I was just in Austin for IPX by Impact, and every room I went into, everyone was talking about AI.

For us, I think there are all these AI chats, Claude, ChatGPT, whatever else, and people expect that soon they’ll partner with traffic sources or brands to feature products. I think that would lose the sense of the whole AI chat experience, because I’m not there to be sold something, I’m there to understand and compare.

What I see AI doing right now is the boring, critical work, smart routing, creative testing at scale, predictive audience targeting. It’s not replacing the strategist, it’s replacing the guesswork.

For creators specifically, it’s doing a lot of work, helping create and test big volumes of creatives. If you look at where traffic opportunities are emerging today, performance-driven creators on a CPA model are the story right now.

A few years ago you’d see influencers with their nose up, working on a prepayment, not caring about results, just doing outreach and giving you audience, whether they buy or not wasn’t their business. Today it’s a whole different industry, creators want to be involved deeper in the customer journey, they want to see real sales, they want commissions and payouts, not just get paid for posting.

Q: Speaking of influencers, is there a real difference in conversion rate between big influencers and micro or nano influencers?

Jane Ejim: That’s very true. We’re seeing nano creators convert at roughly 7%, compared to about 3% for macro influencers. Smaller audience, much higher trust, much better numbers.

“Nano creators convert at roughly 7%, compared to about 3% for macro influencers.” – Jane Ejim, ClickDealer

As a traffic source, what we’re also doing as an e-commerce unit at CDG is using AI to attract audience by building apps or web services. We’re working on an AI styler right now, where customers can upload their current clothes or accessories and ask the styler to put together an outfit for an evening. If they don’t have the right pieces in their wardrobe, they can also buy from our brands on the back end. It’s still early, we’re figuring out the details, think of it as a teaser for now.

Q: One piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out as a media buyer today, say with ClickDealer?

Jane Ejim: Communication matters. Come to us, show us where you stand, tell us if you’re a beginner or not, don’t try to overdo it, because we’re here to help you. And if you want us to help you the right way, we need to understand where you actually are.

One more thing I’d say, not just to media buyers but to everyone working in this industry: Performance marketing rewards people who stay curious, and it punishes people who stay comfortable.

Look at me, 13 years in, and I’m still the most curious person in the room. I think that’s the whole secret sauce.

Q: Is there a problem in affiliate marketing right now that you wish would get solved?

Jane Ejim: I think we’ve touched on it already, affiliates paying more attention to payout than conversion rate. I really hope affiliates would look at conversion rate alongside payout, because it matters. Sometimes payout isn’t everything, the context matters too, whether you get paid on time, whether the brand is reliable.

I’d say there are three things a media buyer is really looking for. A payout that respects the time they put into a campaign, the brand itself, and the brand paying on time. That really matters, even though the payment and approval cycle is longer in e-commerce than in other verticals. But it’s very rewarding, and it’s an evergreen vertical, a white niche. You don’t have to worry about your campaigns getting banned or dealing with compliance issues the way you would elsewhere.

We haven’t really touched on the compliance side of e-commerce offers in this conversation, but it matters. More and more affiliates are moving to e-commerce, and out of grayer or riskier offers they used to run, because it’s evergreen. More affiliates are moving not just to e-commerce, but to insurance, home improvement, and other white niches, because the lifespan of these campaigns is much longer and there’s a lot less headache with bans.

CONCLUSION

Two things from this second half of the conversation are still sitting with me.

The first is the milk analogy. It’s such a simple way to think about creative fatigue, but it’s true. Creatives have a shelf life, and if you’re not refreshing them every two to three weeks, you’re feeding your audience leftovers and wondering why nobody’s biting anymore.

The second is that line about tracking. “If you’re not tracking it, you’re doing guesswork, not marketing.” I hear a version of that from almost every guest on this podcast, but Jane’s framing of last-click attribution as basically fiction in e-commerce, because of how long and cross-device the sales cycle is, is one of the clearest explanations I’ve heard for why clean tracking actually matters here.

You can reach out to Jane on Linkedin or on Clickdealer. She will help you out start with ecommerce offers!

Here’s what to take away from Part 2:

Treat creatives like milk, they have a shelf life. Refresh every two to three weeks.

Test cheap and fast, two or three creatives at a time, 48 to 72 hours of data before you judge anything.

Scale gradually and tell your network before you scale big. Brands want stability, not surprises.

Last-click attribution is close to fiction in e-commerce. Clean tracking is what separates knowing from guessing.

Nano creators are converting at roughly double the rate of macro influencers.

Stay curious. It’s the one piece of advice a 13-year industry veteran still leads with.

Compliance matter more in ecommerce.

If there’s one thread running through both parts of this conversation with Jane, it’s this: the affiliates who win in e-commerce aren’t the ones chasing the biggest payout or the fastest scale. They’re the ones who actually know their numbers, conversion rate, attribution, and when a campaign is genuinely ready to grow.

That’s exactly what CPV Lab and CPV One are built for. Real conversion tracking, postback URLs, and split testing landing pages, all in one dashboard, so you’re scaling based on data instead of a hunch.

And if you’re running ClickDealer offers, both connect directly, so every click, conversion, and payout flows straight into your tracker. Check our step by step ClickDealer integration guide to get set up.

Start your 14-day free trial here!

See the whole interview on YouTube or on Spotify.

This interview is part of our ongoing Champions of Performance Marketing series featuring marketing experts who share actionable strategies you can implement today. Creatives have a shelf life, and audiences become blind to ads that run too long without a refresh, even if the offer itself is still strong.

How do you know when an affiliate campaign is ready to scale? Look for consistent, repeatable conversions over at least 48 to 72 hours, not a single lucky sale. Scale gradually and horizontally across audiences before increasing budget dramatically, since sudden jumps can trigger algorithm instability and alarm advertisers who expect stable, predictable growth.

Do nano influencers convert better than macro influencers? Yes. According to Jane Ejim, nano creators convert at roughly 7%, compared to about 3% for macro influencers, largely because of the higher trust smaller, more engaged audiences place in them.

Also, Alexia Chirita mentions the same thing about micro influencers here.

What is a postback URL, and why does it matter for e-commerce affiliates? A postback URL automatically sends conversion data from the affiliate network /advertiser back to the affiliate’s tracker the moment a sale happens. This lets affiliates see conversions from every campaign in one dashboard instead of waiting on manual reports, and it’s essential for accurate conversion tracking in e-commerce.

Can I track ClickDealer e-commerce campaigns with CPV Lab or CPV One? Yes. Both CPV Lab and CPV One integrate directly with ClickDealer, syncing clicks, conversions, and payouts automatically. Follow the step by step ClickDealer integration guide to connect your account.

Author: Julia Draghici

Julia is the CEO of CPV Lab and CPV One ad trackers.
