You started out as a developer. How does someone go from writing code to affiliate sites, advising brands on AI, and selling businesses?

Daniel Stanica: It was quite a journey, but I was really happy at every step and I learned a lot over the years. I started like twenty years ago as a PHP developer, doing scripts and small software, mostly as a freelancer. After I got enough experience, I started developing my own businesses, only digital businesses, that’s something I definitely want to say. I don’t like managing stock, managing timetables and things like that. For me, digital business is the perfect thing, because you can make your own schedule, you don’t have to deal with stock and everything.

After I created so much software for other people, I said, hey, it’s time to create my own apps and my own software. And that’s when you realize you have to market it, you have to start selling it, and that’s when the problem came, because I didn’t know too much about marketing.

So I started looking for ways to develop my businesses, and that’s how I got into marketing. The first thing that caught my eye was SEO and organic marketing. For more than 10 years, I learned to do SEO and develop businesses that way. I also grew my own communities, my own websites, and helped companies find the best way to advertise themselves and grow with SEO.

In the last year, especially after the pandemic and after ChatGPT and AI came along, I was totally pumped up to see exactly how brands are recommended by AI. It’s part of SEO, but it’s also a new layer that needs to be learned and tested.

So that’s exactly what I’m doing now, I advise businesses on how to grow and how to be recommended by AI search engines. Besides that, I continue to grow my own network of websites, building them, buying them, and eventually selling them.

Q: What’s the one project you’re proudest of, out of everything you’ve built or sold?

Daniel Stanica: Being an entrepreneur, the nicest thing is that you can build exactly what you want, exactly how you want it to look. So I can’t say I started a project I didn’t enjoy, I started all of them because I believed in them.

Looking back, one of the websites I own is MonetizeBetter.com, it was a blog at the time and now it’s a community where I teach people how to monetize their assets better, how to grow, and how to build their audiences and make more money with those audiences.

That project is close to me, I started growing it in 2019 and I’ve been at it for five or six years, it’s still driving results. The SEO rankings aren’t what they used to be, they’re declining, but because it’s a strong brand with a lot of organic and direct traffic, the community is still growing, new members join every day. It’s nice because it’s a community where we actually learn how to monetize better and make more of our digital assets. I think that’s the project I’m most proud of.

Q: What made you stop and actually study what was happening, instead of just adjusting as you went?

Daniel Stanica: It was one of my own problems, honestly.

After the “helpful content updates” that started in September 2023, a lot of websites started to abruptly lose organic traffic. That was my problem too, so I started to understand what exactly happened, what changed, what we could do to recover. That’s how I started looking at my own websites first, and then at what happened to competitors, and that’s how I ended up researching a hundred blogs across different niches, cooking, parenting, finance, digital marketing.

Funny enough, I started tracking this list back in 2022, that’s when I first started following these blogs, because they were publishing blog income reports. That was something cool back then, every blogger would publish what they earned every month and how, so we could all learn from each other. This year, in April 2026, I revisited the list to see what changed, and I was shocked by the results. The median blog lost 85% of its organic traffic from 2022 to 2024.

Q: 85%? That’s shocking.

Daniel Stanica: Yeah, the figures are definitely shocking, and that’s what happened to most of the blogs in the industry. Out of the hundred blogs I tracked, 75% of them lost 75% or more of their traffic. I called my study the Great Blogging Collapse, because that’s basically what happened, most blogs lost a ton of traffic.

But there’s some good news too. 21% of the websites are still thriving, they’re getting more visits and more traffic than before. So I went back into research mode to see what they did differently, and I have those findings.

Q: How did you actually set up the study?

Daniel Stanica: It’s very simple, honestly, this is just competitor research, which is part of any marketer’s job. Almost everyone should be doing it, because in the end, we’re not the only company in town. We always have competitors, maybe not always direct ones, but companies with similar products.

Having this list of blogs, it was easy to use tools like SEMRush and ahrefs to see their organic traffic, their total traffic, and what monetization methods they used, whether they made money through affiliate marketing or ad networks. Having all that data combined, I built the study and pulled the conclusions from there.

Q: Was there a moment when you realized this was structural, that there’s a pattern separating the ones that lost traffic from the ones that survived?

Daniel Stanica: Yes. When I analyzed the content more granularly, what kind of content resisted and what kind stopped ranking, I saw a clear pattern.

The content that wins is basically first-hand experience. Generalistic content no longer works, because AI can produce and summarize it easily. There’s no point creating generic short content anymore. If you want visitors, you need content where you share your own particular experience, bring something new, bring data from your own company or your own research.

The second trait is that the content shouldn’t be easily summarized. If we take this podcast as an example, “top ten affiliate marketing podcasts” is something AI can read from ten sources and generate an answer from. That kind of content won’t bring anything new. But something like “what was my experience going to ten affiliate podcasts”, that’s something AI can’t generalize or summarize, it’s your experience. It might still get cited by AI, but it won’t get replaced by it.

Besides that, what I observed is that websites need a solid brand and brand searches. You need something like an EEAT factor, expertise, experience, authority, and trust. You need to be a brand that AI can rely on.

And the last one, and this is important, is that you need more than content. You need a product, digital or physical, doesn’t matter. It could be a tool, a subscription, a membership, but you need more than content to be recognized as a brand and to get cited and get traffic from Google.

The old model was to create a content farm and publish as much generic content as possible, that no longer works. You need to be a brand, have a product around it, have solid first-hand experience in your content, and then Google will use and recommend that content.

“You need to have a product. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital or physical, but you need more than content to be recognized as a brand.” – Daniel Stanica

Q: So the survivors had experience, brand, product, and their own audience in common?

Daniel Stanica: Right, first-hand experience content, brand searches, a product, and their own audience.

There are websites that have all four, and there are websites that only have two. In the past, a company could just create a lot of content, get searches from Google, and monetize that traffic with ads or affiliate marketing.

Now we’re moving toward needing your own audience, a company that isn’t only relying on Google search.

If Google sees you have great content, a solid brand, a product, and an audience, it may reward you and recommend your content. But Google won’t give you traffic if you have none of that.

Q: What about specific niches? Did your research show clear winners and losers there?

Daniel Stanica: Yes, and we can attach the graphic I made to the article.

The niche that survived best was parenting, and the explanation is clear. Most parenting blogs create content based on their experience as parents, they describe specific problems, treatments, places to go, in detail, that’s first-hand experience. Also, people reading parenting blogs don’t fully trust AI, and honestly they shouldn’t, because it’s difficult to trust what an AI summarized about what’s good for your child. They still prefer content written by other parents who had the same issue. The parenting niche had growth of 108%.

Another one with more modest growth is do-it-yourself and crafts. Again, it’s easy to understand why, DIY content is detailed guides on how to build specific things, that AI can’t really summarize.

The third niche had a decline, but a modest one, food and recipes. Google doesn’t summarize those much at the moment, maybe it will in the future, but right now they treat that content as unique, so blogs in that niche still get more views. Travel is similar, especially content where bloggers describe their own travel experience, what they visited, what they liked or didn’t. You’d rather read that from someone who was actually there.

On the other side, we saw huge declines, 95%, 90%, 93%, in niches like finance, because most finance blogs were lists, “top 10 apps to make money” or “top 10 apps to refer a friend and get paid.” That’s easy to summarize, so traffic there got wiped out.

Same with the money-making blogging niche, tons of blogs explaining how to start a blog and make money with it, all tutorials that could be easily summarized. We saw a huge decline there too.

From this research, the pattern holds, if you offer something AI doesn’t have, first-hand experience, you’ll be rewarded with traffic. If you offer general content that’s already out there, it’s very difficult to rank.

“The parenting niche had growth of 108%, while finance blogs lost up to 99% of their traffic.” – Daniel Stanica

Q: How does AI decide who to mention or recommend? Do you have an understanding of what’s happening behind the scenes?

Daniel Stanica: That’s one of the hottest questions in the industry right now.

In classic search, we’ve had search for over twenty years, we know exactly how it worked. You’d enter a query, and Google’s algorithm would score you based on backlinks and content, then recommend you or not, that was the old playbook. Right now with AI, everyone’s asking, am I recommended by AI, why or why not.

What I can tell you is that context matters a lot.

If you search “best hosting” in AI, it takes that query and splits it into smaller ones, like “best hosting,” “best WordPress hosting,” does a lot of checking, and returns results by combining what it found. And that’s the real difference between normal SEO and AI visibility, context matters a lot.

If I search for best WordPress hosting as an entrepreneur, I get one answer. If someone does the same search but the AI already knows they’re an enterprise user, they’ll get different recommendations. Same if I search from Romania versus someone searching from Asia, they’ll get a different answer because the context is different.

To briefly answer your question, what matters is the number of mentions you have on trusted websites like Wikipedia, Reddit, GitHub, places AI trusts for information.

Reviews are very important too, AI wants to recommend businesses with a solid, positive experience.

If you’re a local business, it looks at TripAdvisor and Yelp. If you’re a software provider, it looks at G2 and Trustpilot.

My main advice is to audit your total online presence, see if you have enough mentions and comparisons, if your reviews are positive, check where your competitors are mentioned and whether they’re in a better light than you. If you’re not mentioned enough, start a campaign to get more positive reviews and more voices speaking positively about you.

Julia’s Take: This is exactly the same discipline we push affiliates toward with ad tracking, know your actual source of truth before you make decisions. Daniel’s talking about auditing your AI mentions and reviews instead of guessing, and it’s the same principle behind tracking every click and conversion instead of assuming a campaign is working. If you don’t measure it, you’re guessing either way.

Q: If a business wants to check where they stand today, is there an actual way to see whether AI knows about them or trusts them?

Daniel Stanica: Fortunately, we now have tools that track AI visibility. ahrefs has its own AI visibility tracker, SEMRush has one too, and Google started adding AI visibility into Google Search Console.

Bing is another good one, they track searches in their own ecosystem, so I suggest people add their website to Bing and Google Search Console. There, you can see how many times your pages have been mentioned in AI responses, and in Bing you can also see what keywords were used in the prompts that got your business recommended.

The only downside with Google Search Console and Bing is you only get information about your own website, not your competitors. That’s why you still need tools like SEMRush or ahrefs. But the main problem with all of them is that none of them track context. As I mentioned, you and I could run the exact same search and get totally different results.

So you also need to make sure you’re choosing the right prompts and testing how to optimize for the exact buyer persona you’re trying to reach.

CONCLUSION

The number that stuck with me most from this conversation is 85%. That’s the median traffic loss across a hundred blogs that were considered successful, even models to learn from, back in 2022. If your business lost 85% of its revenue, you’d call that a crisis. That’s exactly what happened to blogging as a business model, and a lot of site owners still haven’t adjusted to it.

What I appreciated most about Daniel’s research is that it’s not just doom and gloom. 21% of those blogs are still thriving, and the four traits they share, first-hand experience, hard-to-summarize content, a real brand, and a product beyond content, give the rest of us an actual playbook instead of just a warning.

And, as promised, here is the Great Blogging Collapse study by Daniel Stanica.

If you want to get in touch with Daniel Stanica and understand more about this study or if you need his help to analyze your business, you can find him here:

Website: https://danielstanica.com/

Socials: Linkedin, Instagram

Here’s what to take away from Part 1:

The median blog lost 85% of its organic traffic between 2022 and 2024, and 75% of blogs lost 75% or more.

Content that survives has first-hand experience, is hard to summarize, comes from a real brand, and is backed by a product, not just content.

Parenting content grew 108%. Finance and “how to make money blogging” content got nearly wiped out.

AI takes context into account. The same query returns different answers depending on who’s asking and from where.

Mentions on trusted sites and reviews on platforms like G2 or Trustpilot now matter the way backlinks used to.

In Part 2, Daniel and I get into the exact type of content that gets quoted by AI versus skipped over, the biggest mistakes he sees businesses make with AI visibility, how to audit your own AI presence, and why relying on organic traffic alone is a risk not worth taking anymore.

Read Part 2 here.

If there’s one thing this conversation reinforced for me, it’s that guessing doesn’t work anymore, not in content, and not in your campaigns either. That’s exactly why CPV Lab and CPV One exist, so you know precisely what’s converting and where your traffic is actually coming from, instead of assuming.

Start your 14-day free trial here!

See the whole interview on YouTube or on Spotify.

https://youtu.be/oGpbabz30LE

FAQ

What is the Great Blogging Collapse? The Great Blogging Collapse is a study by Daniel Stanica that tracked 100 once-successful blogs from 2022 to 2026. It found that the median blog lost 85% of its organic traffic, and 75% of the blogs tracked lost 75% or more of their traffic, largely due to AI search and Google’s helpful content updates.

Why are some blogs losing traffic while others are growing? Blogs that survived or grew shared four traits: first-hand experience content that AI can’t easily replicate, content that’s hard to summarize, a recognizable brand with brand searches (EEAT), and a product beyond just content. Generic, easily summarized content has been hit the hardest.

Which content niches are most affected by AI search? Finance and “how to make money blogging” niches saw the steepest declines, losing up to 99% of organic traffic, because their content was mostly easily summarized lists and tutorials. Parenting blogs grew 108%, and DIY, travel, and food/recipe niches saw more modest declines or growth, since that content relies more on first-hand, hard-to-summarize experience.

How does AI decide which businesses or content to recommend? AI search takes context into account, the same query can return different results depending on who is asking and where they’re searching from. Beyond that, AI weighs mentions on trusted sites like Wikipedia, Reddit, and GitHub, along with reviews on platforms like G2, Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, or Yelp.

What tools can I use to check my AI search visibility? ahrefs and SEMRush both offer AI visibility tracking, and Google Search Console has added AI visibility reporting as well. Bing also tracks which prompts led to your business being recommended. None of these tools account for context, so results can vary based on who is running the search.

Author: Julia Draghici

Julia is the CEO of CPV Lab and CPV One ad trackers.
