We covered the four traits that separate the survivors from the ones that got wiped out, and which niches held up.

In Part 2, we go deeper into execution. What content actually gets quoted by AI versus skipped over, the biggest mistakes Daniel sees businesses make with AI visibility, how to audit where you stand today, and why he wouldn’t recommend relying on organic traffic alone anymore.

Let’s get into it.

Listen to the episode on our Spotify channel

Or watch it on CPV channel on Youtube

Q: Can you give an example of a piece of content that would get quoted by AI, versus one that gets skipped over?

Daniel Stanica: Like I explained before, the kind of content that definitely gets quoted by AI is content that offers your own experience and isn’t generalistic, that has data AI doesn’t have yet.

My study, the Great Blogging Collapse, is a good example, it’s already being quoted in AI tools, it’s already referenced by people. Why? Because nobody else did that research, and it’s new information AI doesn’t have.

If I had written a generic piece like “blogs are no longer ranking,” sure, anyone can write that, but it won’t get quoted and it won’t get recommended, because it’s just generalistic information, not based on research, not offering specific data.

If people want to get recommended, they should change the kind of content they write and make sure it’s based on real data, on research, on first-hand experience, and written in a way AI can easily decode, like using tables, using schema where possible.

Q: Can you give more examples of that? Tables, schema, what should the content actually contain?

Daniel Stanica: What works best from my experience, when you write about a recommended business, I always include pros and cons, so AI can see exactly what the pros and cons of a tool are.

Then a comparison, how one company compares with another, so AI can easily extract the benefits and features of one versus the competitors.

And a first-hand review, where I review the company and put my actual experience in it. That’s exactly what works. And of course a table where we summarize the results, so AI can extract the information easily.

Q: Based on your experience working with businesses, what’s the biggest mistake you see them make, the kind that actually makes things worse instead of better?

Daniel Stanica: I remember a funny story about a friend of mine. We were talking about AI visibility, maybe a year or so back, and I asked him what he was doing to improve his AI visibility. He told me: “I talk to ChatGPT every day and tell it my company is the best and we should be recommended.”

I told him those sessions don’t go anywhere. You can talk as much as you want to ChatGPT in that session, but that won’t be counted as a recommendation.

What you actually have to do is make sure others recommend you, it doesn’t work to just tell yourself, or the AI, that your company is the best. That was a funny one, but it puts things into perspective.

From my experience, I see people at two extremes.

Some simply deny AI, they say “AI will never be able to do what I do.” I’ve seen this with developers, saying look how dumb AI is, look at these mistakes it makes. But right now AI is so good at writing code that it can replace a lot of a developer’s work, not totally replace, but a lot of it, and then you just check and optimize.

On the other hand, I also wouldn’t go to the extreme of giving everything to AI and saying there’s no point doing anything, AI will take all our jobs. I don’t think either extreme does anyone any good.

What I explain to people is that we should simply be AI aware, keep up with the news and the development, see what works and what doesn’t, but also see the limitations.

That way we can be aware of where AI can help us and where it can just do the work so we don’t have to.

Q: If you talk to a business today, what’s the one thing you’d tell them to start with to grow their AI visibility?

Daniel Stanica: I’d tell them AI visibility is something they should definitely check into.

It’s funny, I actually had this exact conversation out of nowhere, I was at my dentist for a checkup, and she’d been doing a bit of research and saw I do AI visibility consulting, so she asked me what exactly AI visibility is.

I opened my phone right there and searched for the best dentist in the area, and showed her: “hey, you don’t show up here”. And more and more people use AI to make decisions like that, if someone checks and you’re not listed, you lose some of that business.

I explained that the first thing she should do is an audit of her online presence, where does she have reviews, where does she have mentions, are they positive, does she have enough of them. After the audit, the next step is to get more content out there, list her services properly on the website, because she was only briefly mentioning them without real presentation, and she wasn’t actively collecting reviews for her services.

So that’s the first step for any business, be aware that people search for you in AI before making a decision, to compare prices, compare services, see other people’s experience.

Do an audit first, run some prompts about your own business to see if you’re recommended or not, and then work on improving that presence.

Q: You mentioned reviews a few times. How recent do they need to be for AI to actually consider them?

Daniel Stanica: What we know is that AI, because it’s doing searches, prefers fresh content.

There have been studies outlining that AI tries to surface content as fresh as possible, from the last six months to the last year. That matters most.

Think about it like going to a dentist, would you check reviews from the last year, or from seven years ago? A lot can happen with a business in seven years, both positive and negative. So both AI and I, as a person, focus on the latest reviews.

Q: If a business is currently 100% organic, how nervous should they be?

Daniel Stanica: I was 100% organic myself, and I was very nervous about it.

In the end, SEO traffic used to be very easy, you created content, got some backlinks, and started receiving organic traffic. Very straightforward. Unfortunately, things don’t work like that anymore, and I wouldn’t rely on organic traffic alone.

There was a survey where they asked publishers how much they rely on organic traffic and how they see it evolving. The funny part is that the biggest, most important publishers said they have a scenario planned where they assume they’ll have zero organic traffic in the next three to four years.

They’re not even factoring organic traffic into their planning anymore, they want to stress test how they’d survive without it. That’s something we should all learn from, organic traffic shouldn’t be the core of the business.

It’s part of the marketing mix, but no business should rely on only one source. That’s why paid marketing and organic marketing should both be part of the mix. If my business is 100% organic SEO traffic, I’d definitely start looking for alternatives and diversifying.

Q: So it’s about treating organic as just one channel, with other channels included from the start. Where does paid traffic fit in, is it a backup plan, or should it already be part of the mix?

Daniel Stanica: For my clients who were only doing SEO, I told them that before running an SEO campaign, they should run a paid search campaign first. Why? Because what SEO gives you is essentially the position you could already get with paid, except you pay less over time, since creating content and acquiring backlinks usually costs less than paying for every click.

But to make sure the traffic you get is exactly the traffic you want, the kind that actually brings business, I always suggest starting a paid campaign first, see if you’re happy with that PPC traffic, and if you are, you can supplement it or even replace it later with an SEO campaign.

In my opinion, paid traffic should take up a large part of the marketing mix. And as the business grows, it should capture both that paid traffic and the organic traffic and try to retain them as customers, get them to become email or newsletter subscribers so there’s a way to reach them again.

Because traffic you already have and retain on your own list is way cheaper than paying for new traffic every time.

Q: So having multiple channels, organic, paid, email, tracking where everyone’s coming from, and reusing those emails for new traffic, that’s the marketing mix you mean?

Daniel Stanica: Exactly. As a business, we want to grow, so it makes sense to track multiple channels and see which ones bring the most benefit, the most qualified traffic, for as cheap as possible.

And because you’re running a tracking business, a tracker business, that’s exactly why I always tell people to track as much as possible.

See which channel makes sense for you. Never stop tracking new channels and systems that might bring you traffic, because at the level of competition we’re at now, we need to optimize everything as much as possible.

What worked six months or a year ago might not work today. Look how fast social media changes, a couple of years ago we didn’t have TikTok, now it’s huge, people are buying there, learning there, everything.

That’s why I always say track to make the most of your budget, optimize as much as possible, and search for new channels to cover as much of the spectrum as you can.

Julia’s Take: I loved hearing Daniel say this, because it’s the exact same philosophy behind conversion attribution in performance marketing. Whether it’s content channels or ad channels, if you’re not tracking where your results actually come from, you’re optimizing off guesses instead of data. Track everything, or you’re flying blind either way.

Q: For someone who’s been mostly organic and now wants to add paid traffic to the mix, where should they start?

Daniel Stanica: After the helpful content update in 2023, when organic traffic vanished for a lot of these affiliate businesses, they had to replace it somehow.

Funny enough, I went to some affiliate marketing events, and guess who was there, Google, running their own sessions saying “let me tell you what Google can do for affiliates.” That’s when I fully understood Google now sees affiliate marketing as a viable business model, and they want a share of it, they want affiliates buying paid ads.

My advice for someone who was successful with SEO traffic is to track the pages that brought them the biggest profits, the most successful ones, and then optimize those specific pages for paid traffic, find the right keywords, the right funnels, so they can stay profitable with paid traffic.

Say you had a page like “best web hosting for bloggers” that got organic traffic and commissions from a hosting provider, and you’ve worked out the math. What I’d do is start running paid campaigns on that exact page and optimize them to stay profitable, because you already have the relationship with the affiliate program, you already have the links, the pages, the content ready. What you need to do is replace the traffic you lost from organic and still make sure it’s profitable once you’re paying for clicks.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out now, what would it be?

Daniel Stanica: Affiliate marketing is transforming.

I go to events and see the tools people are building, tools where you just insert a manufacturer’s or a service’s website, and the AI tracks reviews, product statistics, information, and builds entire campaigns out of just that website. We didn’t have that before, we had to build creatives manually, research everything ourselves. Now AI can do that.

My advice for someone starting now is to get as much information as possible on what tools actually work today, and understand the market.

The economy isn’t what it was two years ago, we’re seeing signs of recession in different parts of the world, layoffs across industries. Try to understand the industry as much as possible, make use of tools that can help you scale and start campaigns easily.

But most importantly, track as much as possible, check your traffic sources, see what works and what doesn’t, and optimize accordingly.

What worked six months or a year ago may not work now, so we have to stay aware, keep tracking, keep optimizing, until we have campaigns that are actually profitable, and then scale with AI as much as possible.

Q: How do you see AI’s role specifically in analyzing your own data?

Daniel Stanica: That’s exactly why I love where AI is right now, because one thing it does wonderfully is analyze data. You give it context, you give it the data, and it extracts exactly what you need.

On the decision side and the strategy side, it’s not the best yet, there still needs to be a human there. But for analyzing data and pulling out conclusions, it does a wonderful job.

That’s why I advise everyone to use AI to analyze the data they already have in their company and their campaigns, and try to extract the information that helps them plan future campaigns.

Q: Is there a problem in affiliate marketing you’d like to see solved?

Daniel Stanica: I always feel good in affiliate marketing, affiliates and affiliate companies are great people to be around. Some are very open about sharing knowledge, others aren’t, and honestly, you can understand why, they found a niche or a specific tool that works well for them and don’t want mass competition.

Most people do share eventually, once it’s no longer hot, but you won’t find that information at the conference itself, you’ll find it at the after-party, when people are more open.

As a problem, from talking with both companies and affiliates, I think we need a bit more openness in the space. There’s a lot of mistrust between affiliates and ad networks and affiliate programs. In my opinion, if we had some kind of certification or code of conduct that encouraged people to share the right information and data, it would bring more trust into the industry.

Q: Where can people get in touch with you?

Daniel Stanica: After twenty years working without a personal website, I finally decided to create one, that’s where I share my research and the events where I speak. My website is DanielStanica.com, and people can subscribe to my AI newsletter there, find my socials, or contact me anytime. I like talking about the things I’m passionate about, and digital and affiliate marketing are definitely part of that.

CONCLUSION

Two lines from this second half of the conversation are still sitting with me.

The first is the ChatGPT story. It’s almost funny how obvious it sounds once you hear it, telling ChatGPT your own company is the best doesn’t make it get recommended, but I’d bet a lot of businesses are quietly did some version of that right now, hoping proximity to the AI counts as marketing.

The second is what Daniel said about the biggest publishers already planning for zero organic traffic within three to four years. That’s not a small business panicking, that’s the biggest names in the industry stress testing their survival without the channel most of us still treat as our foundation.

Here’s what to take away from Part 2:

Content gets cited by AI when it brings something AI doesn’t already have. Generic advice doesn’t cut it anymore.

Tables, pros and cons, comparisons, and first-hand reviews are the formats AI can actually extract information from.

Telling AI your company is great does nothing. Recommendations have to come from others.

Audit your AI presence first, mentions, reviews, comparisons, before trying to fix anything.

Reviews need to be fresh, AI leans toward content from the last six months to a year.

Don’t rely on organic traffic alone. Paid traffic should be part of the mix from the start, not just a backup plan.

Track everything, across content and ad channels alike, because what worked six months ago might not work today.

That last point is the one I keep coming back to. Whether you’re running content or running paid campaigns, the businesses that survive are the ones that actually know their numbers instead of guessing. That’s exactly what CPV Lab and CPV One are built for, real tracking across every channel and every campaign, so you’re making decisions off data, not assumptions.

Start your 14-day free trial here!

If you want to dig deeper into the research Daniel shared across both episodes, you can find the full Great Blogging Collapse study here. Generic advice that AI can already summarize from existing sources rarely gets cited or recommended.

Does talking to ChatGPT about my own business improve my AI visibility?

No. According to Daniel Stanica, telling an AI chatbot that your company is the best in a conversation doesn’t count as a recommendation. AI visibility comes from other trusted sources mentioning and reviewing your business, not from what you tell the AI directly.

How often do online reviews need to be updated to help with AI visibility?

AI search tools tend to favor fresh content, generally from the last six months to a year. Older reviews carry less weight, since AI treats recency as a signal of relevance, the same way most people would trust a recent review over one from several years ago.

Is it risky to rely only on organic traffic for a business?

Yes. Some of the largest publishers are already planning for scenarios where organic traffic could disappear entirely within three to four years. Diversifying into paid traffic and building an owned audience, like an email list, reduces that risk.

Should paid traffic be a backup plan or part of the strategy from the start?

Paid traffic should be part of the marketing mix from the beginning, not just a fallback once SEO stops working. Testing paid traffic on already-proven, high-converting pages helps confirm profitability and reduces dependency on any single channel.

How does AI actually help with analyzing marketing data?

AI is currently strongest at analyzing existing data and extracting conclusions from it, when given the right context. Strategic decisions still benefit from human judgment, but using AI to process campaign and traffic data can help identify patterns faster than manual analysis. Important is that the data you provide as a base to be analyzed should be accurate and trustworthy. That is why a good campaign tracker can help getting the right data.

Author: Julia Draghici

Julia is the CEO of CPV Lab and CPV One ad trackers.
