How to Track ChatGPT Ads Campaigns with CPV Lab | CPV One

CPV Lab and CPV One support full integration with ChatGPT Ads - the performance advertising platform from OpenAI. You can track clicks and conversions from ChatGPT Ads campaigns, send conversion signals back to ChatGPT via their Conversions API (CAPI), and automatically sync your ad spend into CPV Lab | CPV One reports.

This guide covers the complete setup: importing the ChatGPT traffic source, creating your campaign, configuring conversion tracking, and launching your first ChatGPT Ads campaign with full tracking in place.

☁️ This guide applies to both CPV Lab (opens new window) and CPV One (opens new window). Steps are identical for both products.

What is ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads is the advertising platform operated by OpenAI. It lets advertisers run ads inside ChatGPT and across OpenAI's network. Because ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of active users, it represents a high-intent audience for performance marketers running lead generation, ecommerce, finance, SaaS, and other direct response campaigns.

ChatGPT Ads supports:

  • Conversion tracking via the ChatGPT Conversions API (CAPI)
  • Server-side event tracking using the oppref click ID parameter
  • Cost data export via the ChatGPT Ads API

Does CPV Lab Support ChatGPT Ads?

Yes. CPV Lab and CPV One have native integration with ChatGPT Ads. ChatGPT is available as a pre-configured traffic source in the CPV Lab Traffic Sources Catalog. The integration supports:

  • Click tracking - every ChatGPT ad click is recorded in CPV Lab with the oppref click ID
  • Conversion tracking - conversions from your affiliate network or your own pages are recorded in CPV Lab
  • ChatGPT CAPI - CPV Lab automatically sends conversion events to ChatGPT Ads server-to-server when a conversion is recorded
  • Cost synchronization - CPV Lab pulls your ChatGPT ad spend automatically via the ChatGPT Ads API

How Does ChatGPT Ads Conversion Tracking Work?

ChatGPT Ads uses a unique click ID parameter called oppref to track conversions. Here is the full flow:

Visitor clicks your ChatGPT ad
        ↓
ChatGPT appends a unique click ID to the destination URL as the oppref parameter
        ↓
CPV Lab captures the oppref click ID and records the click
        ↓
Visitor lands on your landing page or goes directly to your offer
        ↓
Visitor converts (purchase, lead, sign-up, etc.)
        ↓
Your affiliate network or your page fires the CPV Lab postback URL or pixel
        ↓
CPV Lab records the conversion and matches it to the original oppref click ID
        ↓
CPV Lab automatically fires a ChatGPT CAPI event with the conversion details
        ↓
ChatGPT receives the server-side conversion signal
        ↓
ChatGPT uses the signal to optimize your ad delivery and find more converters

What is the oppref parameter in ChatGPT Ads?

The oppref parameter is ChatGPT Ads' unique visitor click identifier. It works the same way as fbclid in Facebook Ads or gclid in Google Ads.

Every visitor who clicks a ChatGPT ad receives a unique oppref value in their destination URL. CPV Lab captures and stores this value, then passes it back to ChatGPT when the conversion fires - so ChatGPT knows exactly which click led to the conversion.

💡 Note: ChatGPT Ads does recently added macros for ad-level data such as ad ID, campaign ID, ad group id or ad account id. The oppref click ID is no longer the only parameter passed automatically by ChatGPT into the destination URL. These are set automatically when you import ChatGPT from the CPV Lab catalog.

What URL parameters does ChatGPT Ads support?

ChatGPT Ads supports the following template values in the Landing Page Query Parameters field - available at campaign, ad group, and ad level:

Parameter What it passes
{oppref} Unique click ID for the visitor - required for conversion tracking
{campaign_id} The ID of the ChatGPT Ads campaign
{ad_group_id} The ID of the ad group
{ad_id} The ID of the individual ad
{ad_account_id} The ID of the ChatGPT Ads account

These parameters are added to the destination URL automatically by ChatGPT Ads when a visitor clicks your ad. You configure which ones to include in the Landing Page Query Parameters field in your ChatGPT Ads campaign, ad group, or ad settings.

Before You Start

Quick Summary

Step 1 - Import ChatGPT as a Traffic Source

ChatGPT Ads is pre-configured in the CPV Lab | CPV One Traffic Sources Catalog. You do not need to set up tokens or parameters manually.

  1. Go to Sources ➡️ Traffic Sources in your dashboard.
  2. Click Import from Catalog.
  3. Search for ChatGPT and select it from the list.
  4. Click Save.

Once imported, the ChatGPT traffic source is configured with:

  • External ID Token: oppref - captures the unique ChatGPT click ID for each visitor. This is required for CAPI to work correctly.
  • Tracking Tokens: CPV Lab maps the ChatGPT URL parameters to internal tokens. You can capture {campaign_id}, {ad_group_id}, {ad_id}, and {ad_account_id} alongside the {oppref} click ID - as long as you add them in the ChatGPT Ads Landing Page Query Parameters field (see Step 5).

⚠️ Do not change the oppref External ID Token value. It is what connects every ChatGPT click to the correct conversion when the CAPI event fires.

Step 2 - Set Up Your Campaign in CPV Lab

Setting up a ChatGPT Ads campaign in CPV Lab follows the same process as any other traffic source campaign.

  1. Go to Campaigns ➡️ Add New Campaign.
  2. Choose Quick Campaign Setup or Advanced Setup.
  3. Fill in the campaign details:
    • Campaign Name - e.g. ChatGPT Ads - Finance Lead - US - v1
    • Traffic Source - select ChatGPT Ads
    • Campaign Type - choose based on your funnel:
      • Landing Page - traffic goes to your landing page first
      • Direct Link - traffic goes directly to the offer
  4. Set your cost model and bid to match what you are bidding in ChatGPT Ads.
  5. Add your landing pages and offers.
  6. Click Save.

ChatGPT Ads campaign setup in CPV Lab

  1. Go to the Links & Pixels section of the campaign. You will see three fields that work together for ChatGPT Ads campaigns:
Field What it is Where it goes
Campaign URL Full tracking URL with all parameters included Use this for testing only - open it in a browser to verify tracking works before launch
Link/Target URL Your landing page or offer URL with no tracking parameters Paste this into the Target URL field in your ChatGPT Ads ad settings
Landing Page Parameters The tracking parameters to append to the destination URL Paste this into the Landing Page Query Parameters field in ChatGPT Ads

💡 Why separate fields? ChatGPT Ads - like Google Ads - uses a dedicated Landing Page Query Parameters field to append tracking parameters to your destination URL. This keeps your clean landing page URL separate from the tracking parameters, which makes ad review and compliance checks easier.

  1. Copy the Link/Target URL and the Landing Page Parameters separately - you will use both in Step 5.

💡 The Campaign URL already includes oppref at the end. ChatGPT Ads replaces this placeholder with the real click ID for each visitor automatically. Do not remove or modify it.

Step 3 - Set Up Conversion Tracking

To record conversions in CPV Lab, you need to connect your affiliate network or your conversion page to the campaign.

👤 Affiliate media buyer: Copy the Postback URL from the Links & Pixels section and paste it into your affiliate network's S2S postback settings. The network will fire it automatically when a visitor converts.

🏪 Ecommerce brand or advertiser: Copy the Tracking Pixel (image tag or script) from the Links & Pixels section and place it on your order confirmation or thank-you page.

Step 4 - Configure ChatGPT CAPI

The ChatGPT Conversions API (CAPI) is what sends conversion data from CPV Lab back to ChatGPT Ads - server to server.

Once configured, every conversion recorded in CPV Lab automatically triggers a CAPI event to ChatGPT Ads. ChatGPT uses these events to optimize your ad delivery and reduce cost per conversion.

To complete this step you will need two credentials from your ChatGPT Ads account:

  • Pixel ID - from Tools ➡️ Conversions in ChatGPT Ads
  • API Access Token - from Tools ➡️ Conversions ➡️ Conversion Keys in ChatGPT Ads

Once you have both, go to your CPV Lab | CPV One campaign setup page ➡️ Tracking Pixel section ➡️ ChatGPT CAPI and enter them there along with your chosen event name (e.g. purchase or lead) and currency.

✅ Once saved, CAPI is active for this campaign. Every conversion CPV Lab records will automatically fire a server-side event to ChatGPT Ads - no further action needed.

Step 5 - Create and Launch Your Ad in ChatGPT Ads

  1. Log in to your ChatGPT Ads account.
  2. Create a new campaign with your desired targeting, creative, and budget.
  3. Add ad groups and ads
  4. At the campaign, ad group, or ad level, find the Landing Page Query Parameters field.

💡 Where to find it: The Landing Page Query Parameters field appears at campaign level, ad group level, and ad level in ChatGPT Ads. If you set it at campaign level, it applies to all ads within that campaign. If you set it at ad level, it applies only to that specific ad. Ad level takes priority over ad group level, which takes priority over campaign level.

  1. Paste the Landing Page Parameters you copied from CPV Lab into this field.

The parameters should look like this:

ad={ad_id}&adgr={ad_group_id}&campid={campaign_id}

ChatGPT Ads create campaign - setup query parameters at campaign level

⚠️ The {oppref} parameter is added automatically, it should not be added in the query parameters. The other parameters ({campaign_id}, {ad_group_id}, {ad_id}, {ad_account_id}) are optional but recommended - they let you see ad-level performance breakdowns inside CPV Lab.

  1. At the ad level, find the Target URL (or Destination URL) field.
  2. Paste the Link/Target URL you copied from CPV Lab into this field.

ChatGPT Ads create campaign - setup destination URL at ad level

💡 The Target URL is your clean tracking URL (it can be tracking link, landing page or offer URL). ChatGPT Ads automatically combines it with the Landing Page Query Parameters at serving time.

  1. Complete the remaining ad details (headline, description, creative).
  2. Submit the campaign for review.

✅ Once approved and live, ChatGPT Ads will add the oppref parameter in the destination URL with a unique click ID for every visitor. CPV Lab captures this and uses it to match every conversion to the correct click.

Step 6 - Test Your Tracking

Always test the complete tracking flow before sending real traffic.

  1. Copy the Campaign URL from your CPV Lab campaign.
  2. Open a new private or incognito browser window.
  3. Paste the Campaign URL and load it.
  4. Complete the conversion action on your landing page or offer.
  5. Check your CPV Lab campaign report - you should see both a click and a conversion recorded.
  6. Check your ChatGPT Ads Conversions page - the CAPI event should appear within a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CPV Lab support ChatGPT Ads? Yes. CPV Lab and CPV One both support ChatGPT Ads as a pre-configured traffic source. The integration includes click tracking, server-side conversion tracking via ChatGPT CAPI, and cost synchronization via the ChatGPT Ads API.

What is the ChatGPT Ads click ID parameter? The ChatGPT Ads click ID parameter is called oppref. It works the same way as fbclid (Facebook) or gclid (Google). ChatGPT Ads appends a unique value to it for every click. CPV Lab captures and stores it, then passes it back to ChatGPT when CAPI fires.

Can I run ChatGPT Ads direct link campaigns with no landing page? Yes. Select Direct Link as the campaign type in CPV Lab. The Campaign URL goes directly to your offer. ChatGPT CAPI still works as long as the oppref parameter is captured in the campaign URL.

How do I track revenue from my affiliate network in ChatGPT Ads campaigns? Ensure your affiliate network fires the CPV Lab postback URL with the revenue parameter included. CPV Lab will then pass the revenue value to ChatGPT CAPI automatically via the {!revenue!} placeholder in the Amount field.

Is there a way to automatically sync ChatGPT ad costs into CPV Lab? Yes. See ChatGPT Ads Cost Synchronization for the full setup guide.
