Taboola campaigns tracking

How to Track Taboola Campaigns with CPV Lab (And Actually Know What’s Working)

Posted on August 6, 2026August 6, 2026 by Alex B.

Running Taboola campaigns without proper tracking is expensive guesswork.

Taboola will show you impressions, clicks, and spend. But it won’t tell you which placement is generating conversions, which creative is driving revenue, or which audience segment is worth scaling. Without a tracker between your traffic source and your offer, you’re making optimization decisions based on incomplete data.

This guide walks you through the full setup for tracking Taboola campaigns with CPV Lab and CPV One – from adding Taboola as a traffic source to launching your first fully tracked campaign.

Why Taboola Tracking Is Different From Google or Meta

Google Ads and Meta both have native conversion APIs that let you pass conversion data back directly from your server. Taboola’s attribution works differently. It relies on postback URLs and placement-level tokens to connect traffic data to conversion data.

This means the tracking setup requires a performance marketing tracker in the middle. Without one, Taboola can show you which ad got clicked – but not what happened after the click. You lose the ability to optimize at the placement level, which is where native ad campaigns are actually won or lost.

CPV Lab and CPV One sit between Taboola and your offer, capture every data point on the way through, and give you a complete picture of what’s working.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A CPV Lab or CPV One account (start your free 14-day trial here)
  • A Taboola Ads account
  • A landing page URL
  • An offer URL with a subID parameter slot ready
  • A custom tracking domain (see our setup guide here)
Not sure which product to use? CPV Lab is self-hosted – you install it on your own server and own your data completely.
CPV One is cloud-hosted – no installation, ready in minutes. Both support full Taboola tracking with identical features.
If you’re not sure, start with the CPV One free trial.

Step 1: Add Taboola as a Traffic Source in CPV Lab

Go to Sources then Traffic Sources in CPV Lab or CPV One. Click Import from Catalog and search for Taboola.

CPV Lab pre-populates everything automatically – the tokens, the postback URL, the bid type fields. You don’t need to configure anything manually. Review what’s been added, make any edits you need (name, timezone, currency), and save.

The key tokens CPV Lab captures for Taboola include site ID, campaign ID, and placement data. These are what let you see performance broken down by individual publisher and widget later in your stats.

Step 2: Add Your Landing Page and Offer

In CPV Lab, go to LPs and Offers then LP Management to add your landing page. Enter a name and paste your landing page URL. Save.

Then go to Offer Management to add your offer. Select your affiliate network as the offer source, add the payout, and paste your offer URL.

Important: the subID token Your offer URL needs the subID token at the end. This is the parameter that fires when a conversion happens and passes the data back to CPV Lab. You can find the correct token format by clicking the token helper button next to the URL field. Without this, CPV Lab records the visit and click but cannot connect them to the conversion.

Step 3: Create the Campaign in CPV Lab

Click Campaigns then “Add New Campaign”. Select “Direct Link and Landing Page” as the campaign type, then choose Advanced Setup.

Here are the key settings to configure for a Taboola campaign:

Tracking domain: Use your custom tracking domain here, not the default CPV Lab domain. For native ad campaigns this matters because a custom domain keeps your tracking links on first-party infrastructure, which improves data reliability and keeps a barrier between your primary domain and your tracking domain.

Data options: Select all. For native ads you want every data point available – geo, device, browser, ISP, connection type. More data means better optimization decisions later.

Engage: This shows how long visitors stay on your page. Set it to 5 seconds. If 90% of your Taboola traffic bounces in under 2 seconds, that tells you the quality is poor before you’ve spent your whole budget.

Redirect type: For affiliate campaigns use Double Meta Refresh. This hides your landing page URL from the affiliate network on the other side. For your own products, use Direct Redirect.

AI Smart Rotation: If you’re running multiple landing pages or offers, turn this on. CPV Lab uses AI to identify your best-performing pages and offers and automatically sends more traffic to them.

Traffic source and tokens: Select the Taboola traffic source you just added. Set your bid cost model to match what you’re using in Taboola (CPC for most campaigns). Add your tokens.

Landing pages and offers: Add the landing page and offer you created in Step 2. Set your share percentages. If you’re testing two landing pages, set them to 50 each and let the data tell you which one wins.

Save the campaign.

Step 4: Add the Tracking Link and Pixel to Your Landing Page

After saving, scroll to the Links and Pixels section of your campaign. This is where you get the two pieces of code that connect your landing page to CPV Lab.

Step 1 link: This goes on your CTA button. When a visitor clicks it, CPV Lab records the click and redirects them to your offer. Replace whatever link is currently on your button with this one.

Step 2 code: This is the JavaScript tracking pixel. Paste it just above the closing body tag in your landing page HTML. When a visitor lands on the page, this fires and records the visit in CPV Lab along with all their data.

Use Save & AI Validation before launching Before launching, click the Save & AI Validation button. It checks your entire campaign setup for broken links, missing pixels, and incorrect subID formats. It’s the fastest way to catch errors before they cost you money. When everything is correct you’ll see a green ‘All good – your campaign is valid and ready to launch’ message.

Step 5: Connect CPV Lab to Your Taboola Campaign

In Taboola Ads Manager, create your campaign as normal. When it asks for your landing page URL, paste your CPV Lab campaign URL instead of your actual landing page URL.

This is the bridge between the two platforms. Taboola sends traffic to CPV Lab, CPV Lab records the visit and redirects the visitor to your landing page, and everything is tracked from that point forward.

Set your audience targeting, budget, and creative in Taboola as normal and launch.

What You Can See in CPV Lab Once Traffic Starts

This is where the setup pays off. Once Taboola traffic starts flowing through CPV Lab, your stats show:

  • Which Taboola placement (site and widget ID) is generating conversions and which is wasting budget
  • Which creative is driving clicks versus which is driving actual conversions – these are often different numbers
  • Cost per conversion broken down by placement so you know exactly where to cut and where to scale
  • ROI across landing page variations if you’re split testing
  • Full visitor data: country, city, device type, browser, ISP, connection type

This is the data that lets you optimize a Taboola campaign properly. Block the placements that eat budget without converting. Scale the ones that work. Test landing page variations with real data. None of this is possible without placement-level tracking in place.

CPV Lab vs CPV One – Which One for Taboola?

Both products support full Taboola tracking with identical features and the same setup steps. The difference is in how they’re hosted and who they’re best suited for.
